Overview

What patients should know about IVF.

IVF brings egg and sperm together in a lab, and the embryo is then placed in the uterus. Your doctor will check your history and advise if it suits you.

Questions patients may ask

Clear answers to common questions about fertility, IVF treatment and the journey to parenthood.

Is IVF painful?

Most women find it manageable. The hormone injections are given under the skin and may cause mild discomfort. Egg retrieval is done under anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure.
In IUI, prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus, and fertilisation happens inside the body. In IVF, fertilisation happens in the laboratory and the embryo is then placed in the uterus.
Some women notice bloating, mild cramps, mood changes or breast tenderness from the medicines. A more serious condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is uncommon, and your team will monitor you closely to reduce the risk.
