Before your visit

Prepare for the next step.

For a suspected stroke or any emergency, do not wait for an appointment. Call the hospital or come to the emergency department immediately.

01
Note the time symptoms began

Tell the team exactly when the symptoms started, or when the person was last seen well. This time decides which treatments can be given.

02
Bring relevant records

If it is safe and quick to do so, carry previous reports, scan results and a list of current medicines. Please mention long-term conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, and any blood thinners the patient takes.

03
Stay calm and follow the team’s guidance

Keep the patient lying comfortably, do not give food, water or tablets by mouth, and let the emergency team take over as soon as you arrive.

Questions patients may ask

Clear answers to common questions about stroke symptoms, emergency treatment and recovery.

What are the warning signs of a stroke?

Common signs include a drooping face, weakness or numbness in one arm or leg, slurred or confused speech, sudden loss of balance, vision problems and a sudden severe headache. If you notice any of these, even if they seem to pass, reach the nearest emergency department immediately.
Brain cells are lost quickly when blood flow is blocked or a vessel bleeds. Some treatments work only within a limited time after symptoms begin, so reaching the hospital early gives the best chance of saving brain function and reducing long-term disability.
Many patients improve with timely treatment and regular rehabilitation. The extent of recovery depends on the type and severity of the stroke and how quickly care begins. Physiotherapy, speech therapy, healthy habits and regular medicines also help lower the risk of another stroke.
